Kengo Hogosha Naginata
The Naginata was a common yet fearsome polearm used throughout Japanese history.
Historically, the Naginata was often used by foot soldiers to create space on the battlefield as they have several situational advantages over a katana.
The forging, construction and polishing of the Naginata is very similar to that of the Japanese Katana and was commonly used by Samurai Ashigaru ( foot soldiers) and Sohei ( Warrior Monks ) but perhaps is most widely recognised as the iconic weapon of the Onna-bugeisha, female warrior's of the bushi class in feudal Japan.
Onna-bugeisha were trained in the use of weapons to protect their household, family, and honour during times of war.
During the Edo Period, many schools focusing on the use of the Naginata were created and in modern times today the Japanese Polearm has once again risen to popularity with more people studying every year worldwide.
Our GVA Kengo Hogosha Naginata differs from our standard Hogosha Naginata in several ways.
The Kengo shares the same aesthetic aspect of its little brother and is forged of 1095 High carbon steel, hand sharpened with a beveled back edge.
However, the blade of the Kengo (meaning strong/ firm) is much longer in length ( and is secured to a 2 piece, dual steel collar steel pole staff that is threaded at the centre for impact resistance and held in place by 4-6 traditional mekugi pegs.
The blade and pole can be separated for storage/cleaning or locked firmly together as a single staff.
The Kengo is a heavier / larger alternative to our standard Hogosha Naginata and therefore has been designed accordingly with extra features to accommodate for its different point of balance and structural stability. It features a thicker staff pole of which is also steel.
Featuring custom Kanji engraved saya and blade with dual bohi.
Designed exclusively in-house by GVA, the Kengo Hogosha Naginata is perfect for demonstration and can be forged in either
live or Iaito style ( dull edge) .

Great!
When I first saw the naginata on the website, I was disappointed with the length, which measured as 195cm. Compared with HanWei naginata, there was not much difference. I discussed this with Dan, the head of this company, and he suggested he design a new naginata measured at 215-220cm as I requested. After receiving this new naginata, I am finding that it works well, and has strong shaft and sharp blade. It is similar to the products used in ancient years. I recommend serious martial arts practitioners have this real naginata.
